U.S. coast guard ship sails through Taiwan Strait: Defense ministry

  • A United States Coast Guard ship transited through the Taiwan Strait on Thursday, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense (MND) said.
  • The ship was carrying out a freedom of navigation mission and was sailing through the strait in a northerly direction, coming from the south, the MND said.
  • The Republic of China (Taiwan) military was closely monitoring the surrounding waters and airspace during the ship’s transit and detected no abnormal activities, the ministry said.
  • The American Coast Guard vessel made the transit one day after a Chinese naval fleet, led by the Shandong aircraft carrier, sailed through the waterway, which prompted the MND to deploy an “appropriate amount” of military assets in response.
