Thailand: Prayut rejects cabinet revamp talk

  • Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on 1 Sep 21 denied rumours regarding a cabinet reshuffle and a House dissolution, saying that he intended to stay on until the government completes its four-year term in 2023.
  • He made the remarks as the government faced a grilling from the opposition during the four-day no-confidence debate which started on 31 Aug 21, with the votes to be cast on 4 Sep 21.
  • Gen Prayut’s comments also come as the coalition government is rocked by rumours that efforts are being made to vote against and unseat the prime minister at the no-confidence debate. Prayut said on 1 Sep that Gen Prawit had reassured him that he has cleared the air within the ruling party and there were no problems.
  • Gen Prayut said on 1 Sep 21 that he had heard about various rumours; one being about the move to gather support among MPs to vote against him at the no-confidence debate. Gen Prawit, he said, had pledged to look into the matter.
