Thailand: Poll proposal for 10 Mar 19 gains steam

  • Somchai Srisutthiyakorn, a former Election Commission (EC) member, has supported the EC’s proposal for 10 Mar 19 as the new election date if the poll is delayed from 24 Feb 19.
  • 10 Mar 19 will be “a safe poll date” to avoid any future legal complications that could lead to the poll being nullified, said Mr Somchai who is now a Democrat Party candidate for a House seat in Samut Sakhon.
  • On 4 Jan 19, an EC source told the Bangkok Post that the commission has proposed the date to Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam.
  • That date is still within the 150-day deadline for the election to be held. Under the constitution, the election must be held within 150 days of the organic law governing the election of MPs taking effect, which took place on 11 Dec 19.
