Malaysia: Zahid: Vote BN in Kimanis, Bung needs Sabahan ally in Parliament

  • Umno has urged voters to give Barisan Nasional a stronger voice in Parliament by making sure its candidate Datuk Mohamad Alamin wins in the Kimanis by-election.
  • Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said there was only one representative from Sabah in Parliament, referring to Kinabatangan MP Datuk Bung Moktar Radin.
  • “Don’t let Bung be the only brave one to speak up for Sabah, let’s add another person there – Mohamad, to back him up,” the Umno president said during his speech at Mohamad’s campaign ceramah in Kg Malawaring, Bongawan on 8 Jan 20 night.
  • He said while Mohamad may seem like an underdog candidate, the people’s sentiments on the ground wanting Barisan to retain the Kimanis seat remains strong.
  • He said Barisan would make sure that Sabah and Sarawak rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) would be fully restored.
  • Asked about the alleged audio recordings of “high level conspiracies” involving former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak released by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on 8 Jan 20, Zahid said it would not affect how Kimanis voters feel about Barisan.
  • He said authorities should carry out their duties according to their job scope without any political agenda or diversion of issues.
  • Zahid also commended former incumbent Datuk Seri Anifah Aman for not contesting the Kimanis seat.
  • He talked about Anifah’s past performance as MP and foreign minister, which he described as excellent.
