Indonesia: Jokowi opens Cabinet door to opposition

• President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo brought the horse-trading over seats in his next Cabinet into his own office over the past two days as he signaled his openness to allow erstwhile opposition leaders into his coalition during his second and final term in office.
• In the latest high-profile event on 11 Oct 19, Jokowi welcomed Gerindra Party chairman Prabowo Subianto ─ his challenger in the Apr 19 election ─ to the State Palace in a meeting that the latter said had been initiated by the President himself.
• Speaking after Jokowi on 11 Oct 19, Prabowo expressed his party’s readiness to contribute to assisting Jokowi’s administration as he reminded the public that the political battle between the two in Apr 19’s election was over.
• Should Gerindra fail to obtain seats in Jokowi’s second-term Cabinet, Prabowo said the party would remain “loyal” as a balancing power to maintain checks and balances in the government.
