India: Shah forms team to strengthen BJP in TN, to decide on partner in Sep 18

  • The Bharatiya Janata Party will decide on its coalition partner in Tamil Nadu for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections post-Sep 18, party national president Amit Shah said in his address to more than 10,000 party workers from the state, gathered in Chennai.
  • Addressing the party’s critics, Shah mentioned a list of initiatives taken by the central government in the state in the past four years and urged the cadre and people of Tamil Nadu to question what erstwhile non-BJP governments had done for the people of the state.
  • According to sources aware of the proceedings at a meeting of BJP parliamentary in-charges with the party president on 9 Jul 18, a new team has been formed to “strengthen and spread” the BJP among the electorate in every constituency.
  • Discussions have also taken place on the strengths of the BJP and about constituencies where more efforts are needed to get in the race. “Amit Shah has also made it clear that several top BJP leaders will be frequently making visits to the state ahead of the parliamentary elections,” a source told ET.
