Thailand: Improving economy lifts local tourism – 23 Jun 2017

  • The Thai tourism industry is expected to continue growing in 2Q17 and 3Q17, thanks to an improving domestic economy and an influx of tourists seeking to avoid high-risk countries.
  • Ittirit Kinglake, president of the Tourism Council of Thailand (TCT), forecasts the country will receive 8.03mn international tourists during 2Q17, up 6.4% y/y.
  • TCT unveiled its 2Q17 tourism operator confidence index on 22 Jun 17. The index fell to 101, suggesting the industry is at normal levels. Arrivals and income generation will grow at 7.8% and 9.8% respectively, TCT said.
  • A stronger economy in 2Q17 drove the index’s improvement. Another key factor was tourists choosing Thailand over high-risk areas such as the Middle East and Korea.
